Rec 3 Genesis. (Review)

Rec 3 Genesis (2012)

Director- Paco Plaza

It the day of Koldo (Diego Martin) and Clara's (Leticia Dolera) Wedding day and nothing could of been more perfect, not until guests at the reception start to show symptoms of a strange illness....

First of all I would like to state that Rec (2007) is one of my favourite horror films, where an unknown virus cages residents of a Barcelona building who have to fight to stay alive. The original captured a realistic view of how a real life situation would pan out, it was tense, very well acted and gave enough scares to even make the toughest of horror fans to flinch. Rec in itself showed the world that a 'Cam' film can work and has influenced a number of films since.

When Rec 2 was released, the story continued straight after the first with a SWAT team entering the building to discover what had happened and for the most, it stuck with the original tense and realistic feel. Of course, in the second installment, the the reason for the outbreak is revealed and I found myself cursing the route they chose. for anyone who has not seen the Rec series I will refrain in this review of giving it away, but all in all Rec 2 was still a good piece of cinema.

Now on to Rec 3 Genesis. To be honest, I am unaware of how this film fits in with the first two features, with the film starting with the 'Cam' view every thing seems to the same as before, by portraying the filming of a very realistic wedding scene and the start of the reception carries on in the same vain. But as everything kicks off, the camera view is scrapped and the movie cuts to the usual view and with it, all the sense of realism that makes the Rec series what it is disappears.

I am not sure if Paco Plaza (the director of the first two films) had a break down or watched a lot of 'funny' zombie films in between the recordings of Rec 2 and 3, but the film seems to be more comical than serious to a point where scenes reminded me of films such as Planet Terror and Evil Dead 2. I have to be honest, I was not expecting this and although both films mentioned are very good films in themselves, the comic route has no place in the Rec series. don't get me wrong, when I say comical, Rec 3 is not a comedy, but there is comical elements that seep through in the gory scenes, in the main actors reactions and their actions.

Rec 3 Genesis, in itself is a decent enough film to keep the horror and virus/zombie fans entertained but one that should not be included in the Rec series as most things that made the series unique and work have been ignored in this piece. I hope that Rec 4 will revert to its origins and get back the realism that made me both respect the director and give me the willies!

6/10
