Drive (2011)
Director - Nicolas Winding Refn
'Driver'(Ryan Gosling, All good things) is a quiet chap, working the day as a mechanic and movie stunt driver in L.A. By night he is a get away driver for hire. Life is good, life is simple and then as if from nowhere it is turned upside down by meeting his neighbour Irene (Carey Mulligan, Never let me go, Public Enemies) and her young son Benicio (Kaden Leos). After spending time with his new friends and becoming close, Irene's husband Standard (Oscar Isaac, Sucker Punch, Robin Hood -2010-)Is released from prison, and gets them all involved in trouble.
Although Driver hardly says a word in this film, you can still sense every emotion, tell what he is thinking (most of the time) and that is not an easy thing to do, and I must praise Gosling for his performance. The Film starts, as usual, with a scene of what our 'hero' does, so he's getting some bad guys away from where they just did bad guy stuff, you know how it is. but its not a jumped up overblown car chase with exploding cars and trucks tipping over like in Bad Boys II or Gone in 60 Seconds. Its clever, thought out and devious and I was impressed with that, as from the look of this film, I would of thought it would be overblown. Drive isn't a new concept but is very slick and well thought out, not just in its storyline, but the way its shot, the vibrancy of each shot, the sound track that fits so well with its visual environment. I also like the caricature that is Driver, I like the fact he comes across as a nice guy with the neighbours, but when the pap hits the litter box, you don't want to get in his way.
8/10
